Lambing weekend at Rand Farm Park

Lambing weekend

As you travel through Lincolnshire, you will probably notice a lot of lambs. that is because they are born at this time of year. At Rand Farm Park, there are sheep which are due to give birth at any moment, and you can go along and see this miracle happening! As well as that, there are also some baby lambs who have had to leave their mothers for some reason (either illness or rejection from the mum or she doesnt have enough milk for them) so they are bottle fed, which everyone can have a go at. Scott Morely is the Farm Manager. He said, “We would never take a lamb away from its mother without good reason. We try to do our best for them.”

Baby animals

Along with Lambs, there are plenty of other animals to see.

One animal which you probably will not see out in the Lincolnshire Wolds is a baby donkey. (Known as a foal) This one was less than a week old when we saw her. Scott said, “She’s all legs and ears at the moment but she’ll soon grow into them.”

Other animals you might see at this time of year are ducklings, chicks, and calves.

At Rand there are lots of piglets. When we were there, there were piglets ranging from new born which were tiny, up to a few weeks old. You can see from ths photo of a newborn piglet alongside its mother that they start off really small and grow into a giant pig.

When it comes to farm animals, it can be a bit confusing as all the animals have so many different names.

For example a female pig is called a sow – but this is only after she has had babies.

Scott said, “There are loads of different terms for animals and it can sometimes get confusing. Lambs can be known as hogs, hoggets and even thieves!”
